Mei-Lin Chau grew up in a quiet, suburban neighborhood where the kids played outside until dusk and nobody locked their doors. But Chau longed for the excitement of the big city. No one understood her desire for the fast moving, bright light culture, and in this isolation, Chau became a bit of a technophile, spending all her free time learning the ins and outs of computers. She taught herself basic programming, and by age 16 she was already involved in the "Haxor" scene of computer hackers and techno-modifications. There was virtually no electronic gadget or program that Chau could not circumvent. She discovered the Marines at her school's job fair. When they asked her about her interests, she revealed her interest in hacking... And when the recruiter told her she could travel the universe, making a career in military computer infiltration, the deal was done. Chau enlisted shortly after her 18th birthday. After boot camp she was assigned to the 2nd and 9th's 1st Platoon as an infantry Tech Specialist. Although she has become somewhat disillusioned with the promises of seeing the world, Chau still thinks she has the best job in the world!
